What to Consider for Your First Ride Off the Track on Your OTTB

3/14/2016

I recently received a request on Facebook for suggestions to consider for someone's first ride off the track on their new OTTB, so I put together this video as a way to share my philosophy on preparing for the first ride off the track.

The Main Takeaways

Before even considering getting on for the first time:
  • Have your horse checked by a chiropractor, dentist, and massage therapist, and also establish a good baseline understanding of your horse's overall health and/or areas of sensitivity or prior injuries.
  • Make sure your new horse understands how to remain relaxed with bit pressure, responds appropriately to pressure on her sides, is able to yield her haunches in each direction, and can stand quietly next to a mounting block.

The first ride is all about TRANSITIONS, TRANSITIONS, TRANSITIONS
  • For a first ride, keep it short - no more than 15-20 minutes - and focus on walk - halt - walk transitions for the majority of the time.
  • Only try trotting if you have an established walk - halt transition
  • If you do trot in the first ride, then keep it brief (no more than 5 minutes total), and focus on quick transitions - walk - trot 2 strides - walk.
  • I never canter in the first few rides; I want my horse to fully understand how to balance under my weight, bend, flex and stay relaxed through transitions before I ask for a canter.

First thing I did with my OTTB was test the brakes in hand and on the lunge line! Love reading your stuff. Am going to work on ground tying this week!

Kyle,
I can't thank you enough for the information you've shared and the video. Today was ride 2 and all went well. Yesterday was strictly walking and turning. Today we were long, low and relaxed at the walk so we did some trotting. More trotting than you recommend in your video so we'll back off tomorrow. I think more ground work is in order for us and slow hacking walks. Will keep you updated. Thanks again!

My OTTB refuses to stand still at the mounting block. He backs up as I try to get on, and if I am able to get on, he immediately lunges forward unbalancing me. Any suggestions?

Hello Jennifer,

Are you able to walk around him with him ground tied in the arena or does he move around when you move around him?

I would start by establishing a solid ground tie away from the mounting block and then slowly up the difficulty. Next would be standing next to the mounting block with you stepping onto the first step and then scratching his shoulder if he stands quietly. Slowly you'll increase the amount of time between when you step onto the mounting block and reward him - aka scratch his shoulder.

You can reference my other blog post at http://www.ottbtraining.com/blog/modifying-your-horses-behavior-to-make-working-with-the-horse-easier-and-safer for the general idea of how to get started with teaching him to stand quietly in general, and I will also try to make a video this weekend about teaching at the mounting block for you.

Thank you very much for your response. I have not worked with him on ground tying at all, so I don't know if he would move around when I moved around him. I will begin there and look forward to your video for other advice.

Hello Jennifer,

I just added a new blog post with a video of my first session working with Moon to start to teach her to stand quietly at the mounting block.
