Golden Dove has only been off the track about 3 weeks after racing for the past 8 years, but she helps prove that often times OTTBs are actually the best behaved horses you can get. At the track with a good trainer, they learn to respect boundaries and have excellent ground manners. Mares get used to being around colts and stallions and vice versa, and stalls are often cleaned with the horses in them so they must respect your space.
Tonight Golden Dove accepted her first treat since coming to my barn less than a week ago, and she also demonstrated her amazing ground manners by politely waiting to come out of her stall and then quietly standing ground tied for more than 5 minutes while I picked up all her feet, introduced the concept of a tarp for the first time, and walked around her. She is a very special horse and is going to make someone very happy when I'm ready to help her find her forever home after some retraining this winter.
